What it costs
What does car insurance actually cost?
It depends on you more than on any average. The national averages published in 2026 disagree by hundreds of dollars, because each one measures a different driver.
It depends on you more than on any average. Published 2026 averages disagree by hundreds of dollars, because each one measures a different driver.
Why the averages disagree
Same country, same year, an $800 spread.
Published 2026 averages for what each source calls full coverage, a year
Five motoring and comparison sources, each with its own driver profile and limits.
None of these is wrong. A 40-year-old with a clean record and high limits is a different driver from a blend of everyone. That is why one “average” tells you very little about your own price.
Where sample prices are published
Illustrations from filings, not quotes.
Nobody publishes a price list you can look yourself up on. Rates are filed with most states’ regulators as base rates and rating factors, not as prices. But some states publish sample premiums, by company, for set example drivers:
- FloridaThe Office of Insurance Regulation’s CHOICES tool, by company and county.
- CaliforniaThe Department of Insurance premium comparison.
- TexasHelpInsure.com.
- Maryland, Hawaii and New JerseyComparison guides too.
Those tools are illustrations from filings, not quotes, and they say so.
That is the whole guide.
You now know what each part of a policy pays for, what each limit means, the coverage that protects you from other drivers, why prices moved, and what a total loss really pays. The one thing this guide cannot give you is your number.
The next step is a real quote for the coverage you want. Answer a few questions and we will pass your request to a licensed insurance agent, who can give you a quote. There is no obligation. One licensed support agent may quote some companies, not every one.
